Bullying is a serious problem in elementary schools, and Anne Arundel County is no exception. In fact, 3rd and 4th grade students are at the highest risk for being bullied. This is a major concern for teachers, parents, and administrators alike. There are a number of reasons why bullying problems exist in elementary schools. One reason is that elementary school students are still learning how to socialize and interact with each other. They may not know how to deal with conflict in a constructive way. Additionally, elementary school students may be more likely to bully others if they feel like they are not part of the "in-crowd." They may bully others in an effort to fit in or feel accepted. Finally, some students bully others because they have been bullied themselves. Regardless of the reason, bullying is never acceptable. There are a number of ways to address bullying in elementary schools. A great way to start would be with our anti-bullying school assembly STAND UP, STEP IN! It offers special lessons on bullying prevention and conflict resolution in a unique, fun and participatory way.
